This hen house project works both as an artifact and a comprehensive research dossier which intends to discuss the problem of misleading animal welfare labels in a sarcastic way. With an "American Certified Humane" label and an open gate at the front of the house disguising its cage-like look from the back, the so called "cage-free" hen house questions the truth behind chicken farming and animal cruelty.
Many unregulated animal welfare labels such as "cage-free" or "organic" can trick consumers into believing that animals are treated well and fairly while it is not true in reality, thus creating confusion for unaware consumers.
I created a double-sided hen house with front and back showing different images to the viewer, the contrast between having an open door and bars also alludes to the double-standard in animal farming. I created a short film in the end inspired by the film "Chicken Run". It humorously depicts a conversation between four chickens who "plot" to escape from this "cage-like" house.
